The Conversation has written an article discussing Quebec’s summer 2023 wildfire season and its consequences. Intense weather conditions fueled this historic outbreak of fires, including unseasonably dry months going into the wildfire season, continued low precipitation and high temperatures, and increased lightning strikes.

Fifth U.S National Climate Assessment and What It Means for the Water and Wastewater Sector

This week the Biden Administration and the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) released the Fifth National Climate Assessment, which is designed to assist and inform a broad audience of decision-makers, including water and wastewater utility operators, in understanding, assessing, predicting, and responding to climate change. The leading chapter in the Nation Topics section, which summarizes current and future risks related to climate change, focuses on water.

U.S. Tallies 25 Billion-Dollar Disasters Already for 2023, Eyes Increasing Unpredictable Weather Ahead

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. confirmed another billion-dollar disaster in October, bringing the total to a record 25 disasters in the first 10 months. This is the largest number of disasters for any year since NOAA has kept track of these types of events. It is also a sign of extreme weather that has grown increasingly frequent, severe, and unpredictable, with the threat of more such events for the remainder of 2023 and into the future.

NERC: Mid and Eastern U.S. at Elevated Risk of Power Shortages This Winter

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has released its 2023-2024 Winter Reliability Assessment, finding that “a large portion” of the North American grid is “at risk of insufficient electricity supplies during peak winter conditions.” Half of the United States, from the Midwest to the East Coast, is at an elevated risk of having insufficient electricity reserves, as well as Quebec and Saskatchewan.

DHS, CISA, and FEMA Unveil New “Shields Ready” Campaign to Promote Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience

This week, DHS, CISA, and FEMA announced the launch of the new “Shields Ready” campaign to encourage the critical infrastructure community to focus on strengthening resilience. Resilience is the ability to prepare for, adapt to, withstand, and rapidly recover from disruptions caused by changing conditions.
