On January 31, U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy announced grants to the Pennsylvania State University, University of South Florida, Colorado State University, and the Water Environment Research Foundation for innovative and sustainable water research to manage harmful nutrient pollution. Excessive nitrogen and phosphorous in waterways, which is usually caused by stormwater runoff and industrial activities, is one of America’s most widespread, costly and challenging environmental problems.
