Today, February 7, 2023, is Safer Internet Day, an awareness day established by the European Union’s SafeBorders project in 2005 and maintained by the Insafe network. Its purpose is to promote awareness of how internet citizens can protect themselves from those attempting to use the internet in a harmful manner. A recent blog post by Tripwire specifically focuses on the issue of privacy and information disclosure, and how someone can control their data in an online world that makes it difficult to do so. The post offers three suggestions for improving data protection. First, limiting where your data is stored, especially with regards to saving payment information on commercial sites. Second, being more careful about data that is posted on social media by restricting who can see your accounts and reducing what you share to essential information. Third, reducing internet consumption in general, in order to reduce exposure to content that encourages you to share data and to find other ways to connect with those around you. Members are encouraged to share this with staff as a security awareness reminder to help encourage better data protection practices. Read more at Tripwire.
