As discussed in previous Security and Resilience Updates, September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), a time when the federal government and its partners promote family and community disaster and emergency planning. Each week of NPM has a theme. The theme for the first week, “Save Early for Disaster Costs,” encourages having sound financial defenses against disasters. To help its partners understand and begin implementing these measures, FEMA has posted a series of tips and links to resources on its NPM webpage. These include a tip to check insurance coverage and take time to collect and secure these and other critical documents before an emergency. FEMA has also made available a series of graphics, videos, and other materials that can be used to engage with audiences and that speak to the NPM 2019 general theme of “Prepared, Not Scared.” And in recognition of the commencement of NPM, risk management company Gate 15 has published a blog on what preparedness means at the personal level, with reflections on how past incidents have led the author to be “perpetually prepared.” Access the NPM website at FEMA.
