Throughout 2023 the U.S. federal government launched several notable initiatives to help strengthen cybersecurity at the federal level and help organizations of all sizes enhance their cybersecurity and resilience amidst increasing threats.

Analysts at IBM Security selected five notable federal government initiatives in cybersecurity over the past year. These include: the White House’s National Cybersecurity Strategy, NIST updating its Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 (CSF), NSA’s best practices for home networks, an executive order on Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the White House’s National Cybersecurity Strategy Implementation Plan (NCSIP). Notably, the new National Cybersecurity Strategy that was released earlier this year, aims to identify the cyber challenges facing the country and offer solutions for improving the security and resilience of federal and private sector networks. The strategy underscores that robust collaboration, particularly between the public and private sectors, is essential to securing cyberspace. In addition, NIST’s CSF 2.0 update reflects changes in the cybersecurity landscape, with the first edition being released in 2014, and makes it easier to put the CSF into practice for all organizations. Lastly, with threat actors often compromising larger organizations after first targeting a remote worker, NSA’s best practices for home networks offers multiple recommendations for teleworkers to secure their home network.
