Last week, FEMA released new updates for its Mitigation Action Portfolio (MAP). This portfolio offers details on innovative hazard mitigation projects for a variety of natural hazards that stakeholders could potentially get funding for under one of FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance programs.

Projects highlighted in the MAP are meant to exemplify successful hazard mitigation that also develops a culture of preparedness and holistic disaster resilience, according to FEMA. It is also a resource to help applicants apply for grants under the Hazard Mitigation Assistance’s grant programs and may be used to inspire mitigation project ideas. The updated MAP includes two new project selection examples: New York City Housing Authority - Breukelen Houses Stormwater Protection (Flood) and the Papio WP-4 Project (Omaha, NE) (Flood). The Papio WP-4 Project was funded via the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program. Stakeholders constructed a dam (an earthen embankment) along the Wehrspann Creek and a flood storage area. The project will provide environmental benefits to the local area and reduce flood risk. In addition, four case studies have been added, including a flood mitigation project by the U.S. Army Corps of engineers using the Engineered Earth Armoring System. Access the full MAP at FEMA
