2018’s Blended Threat Incidents Continued to Blur the Lines between Physical and Cyber Domains
Risk management firm Gate 15 has published an article reviewing blended threat incidents that occurred in 2018 and what they might portend for 2019. Gate 15 explains that blended threats are “natural, accidental, or purposeful dangers” that begin in one domain (i.e., physical or cyber) but have he potential to cross over to the other. Its review of 2018’s blended threats and incidents includes the increasing presence of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including in critical infrastructure facilities, bomb threats spread via email campaigns, wiper malware (e.g., Shamoon) that can cause the loss of business data and impact operations, and power suppliers’ equipment vulnerabilities that can damage buildings and data centers, among others.
