Each year the U.S. recognizes May as National Wildfire Awareness Month, a time when individuals, organizations, and communities are encouraged to consider their wildfire risks and take steps to prevent and mitigate the effects of fires. A U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) website offers helpful information about wildfires, such as defining and describing the wildland urban interface (WUI), the area where human-made structures and infrastructure are in or adjacent to areas prone to wildfire. The USFA addresses a common myth that WUI fire risk is only in western states, noting that Florida, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania have a large number of structures in the WUI. To bolster preparedness for wildfires, the USFA provides information on what to do before, during, and after wildfires, as well as on measures to become fire-adapted. Additionally, the application period for Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) grants is now open. The FP&S grants support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards within the areas of fire prevention and firefighter safety research and development. There is $35 million in funding available. The application period closes at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, May 29.
