Today, the United Kingdom announced it and its allies had exposed a campaign by the GRU, the Russian military intelligence service, of indiscriminate and reckless cyber attacks targeting a variety of institutions. Speaking about the activities that had been uncovered, UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said, “These cyber attacks serve no legitimate national security interest, instead impacting the ability of people around the world to go about their daily lives free from interference…” To help organizations protect themselves against the GRU activity, the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has released an “Indicators of Compromise for Malware Used by APT28” document, containing IOCs in numerous formats (APT28 is one of the names associated with the GRU). It encourages partners to use the indicators in its advisory to check for the presence of this malware on platforms and networks.
