Recognized every September, National Preparedness Month (NPM), provides an opportunity to remind us that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year. For this year’s NPM, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has chosen the overall them of “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” DHS encourages everyone to take time to learn lifesaving skills, such as CPR and first aid; consider the costs associated with disasters you and your organization may face, like floods, earthquakes, and tornadoes; and check insurance policies and coverage for hazards, among other measures. Each week in NPM has its own theme, with the first week (September 1 to 8) being “Make and Practice Your Plan.” DHS has provided resources for this and the other weeks and plans to release additonal content via social media that support their themes.
