According to the FBI Internet Crime Report, Business Email Compromise (BEC) and Email Account Compromise (EAC) are pervasive threats costing victims more than $676 million in 2017. These schemes are difficult to detect due to their convincing nature and high degree of tradecraft exhibited by threat actors. Fraudulent email tactics like BEC and EAC claim victims across all sectors, as well as every size and type of organization. IBM Security Intelligence and Malwarebytes Labs have both written articles to assist users in detecting these fraudulent emails. As these types of messages are often not blocked by email filters, keen awareness is key to recognizing common attributes. Both posts, along with the FBI Public Service Announcement (I-061118-PSA) posted in the June 14, 2018 SRU, offer tips and reminders for proactive safe practices when receiving emails.
