Water Sector Physical Threat Briefing - Understanding the Risk of Civil Unrest and Political Violence during the Election Season

Wednesday, October 16, 2024; 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. ET

The most recent assassination attempt against a former U.S. President is just the latest incident in a rising number of activities associated with political violence and threats of violence directed against public officials. These incidents, alongside political polarization and heated online rhetoric, are partially driving the heightened threat environment in the U.S. homeland. Based on these trends, there is a risk of civil unrest and political violence in the lead up to, during, and in aftermath of the upcoming U.S. elections. This could even lead to malicious activities directed at critical infrastructure from a wide range of threat actors.

To help water and wastewater utilities better understand and manage this security risk, WaterISAC’s next quarterly Water Sector Physical Threat Briefing will focus on this dynamic issue in a special 90-minute webinar on October 16 at 2 p.m. ET. Presenters from Foresight, the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A), and WaterISAC will provide overview of the threat landscape and offer mitigation recommendations to help utilities enhance their security posture.

During the webinar, Foresight will discuss potential scenarios of civil unrest that could occur surrounding the elections. I&A briefers will detail the possible threats stemming from violent extremists and how extremists could take advantage of constitutionally protected protest activity to instigate violence. Lastly, WaterISAC will examine the risks to critical infrastructure stemming from the heightened threat environment and provide security recommendations and best practices for managing potential security threats.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the heightened threat environment and how your utility can work to manage the risk.
