The American Water Works Association's (AWWA's) Cybersecurity Risk & Responsibility in the Water Sector report seeks to help water utilities understand their cybersecurity risks and what they can do to address them. In addition to discussing the significant risks cyber poses to water utilities, which involves a review of some of the most notable cyber incidents involving the sector, the report also addresses less discussed but nonetheless important aspects of cybersecurity. This includes how the foreseeability of cyber issues mandates due diligence and reasonable efforts to implement protective measures, which has been reinforced by several legal cases. The report highlights many of the seminal resources made available to water utilities to help them improve their cybersecurity posture. These include AWWA’s own Cybersecurity Guidance and Tool and WaterISAC’s popular guide to top cybersecurity measures for water and wastewater utilities, an update of which will be released shortly.
