EPA has released an expanded version of its Power Resilience Guide, a tool which enables utilities to identify strategies to mitigate the effects of power outages on operations. This new guide replaces the original version, first released in March 2016, but still includes the original’s seven emphasis areas: Communication, Power Assessments, Generators, Fuel, Energy Efficiency, On-Site Power, and Funding.

The current guide expands on the first edition with additional information about generators and five case studies discussing topics such as long-term generator use, on-site power, and communication through the Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Other additions include a section on black sky planning—preparation for long-term, widespread power outages—and appendices to help utilities both assess their current generators and request new ones.
